St. John??' Men??' Tennis Defeats Army, 4-3

The St. John???s men???s tennis team served up a 4-3 victory over Army Sunday afternoon at the Lichtenberg Tennis Courts in West Point, N.Y. The Red Storm improved to 3-3 on the season, while the Knights dropped to 2-5 overall.
After the Red Storm and Knights spilt the first two doubles matches, sophomore Alex Svetlakov and freshman Derek Wallensteen fought to an 8-6 victory over Johnny Lucero and Bruno Lucivero at the No. 3 spot to give St. John???s the one point lead. Senior Tom Green and sophomore Artem Vlasenko stormed past Mike Good and Eddie Kang, 8-1, at the No. 1 spot, while John Houghton and Phil Muhawi defeated Louis Desmarteaux and Martin Kosut, 8-3, at second doubles.
In singles action, senior captain Desmarteaux quickly made the contest 2-0 in St. John???s favor as he defeated Houghton (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 1 spot. However, Good and Lucero quickly tied the event, 2-2, with their wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions. Good topped freshman Kosut (6-2, 6-2) at third singles and Lucero routed Wallensteen (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 5 spot.
Kang gave the Knights a one point lead, 3-2, as he was victorious over Svetlakov (6-2, 7-5) at fourth singles, but the Red Storm weren???t about to give up that easily as Vlasenko knocked off Muhawi (6-2, 7-6) at the No. 2 spot.
Tied 3-3, the Red Storm???s deciding match came at the hands of Green at sixth singles. He overpowered Lucivero (7-5, 6-4) to give the St. John???s the win.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, March 2 against the 74th-ranked Tigers of Princeton. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Jadwin Gym Tennis Courts in Princeton, N.J.
