St. John??' Men??' Tennis Edges Binghamton, 4-3

The St. John???s men???s tennis team defeated Binghamton University, 4-3, Saturday night at the Bridgeview Racquet Club in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Red Storm improved to 2-0 on the season, while Binghamton fell to 0-4 overall.
St. John???s grabbed an early advantage in the match by winning the doubles point. Senior Tom Green and sophomore Artem Vlasenko swept Jon Bonnet and Pierre Clavel, 8-0, at the No. 2 spot, while the freshmen pair of Derek Wallensteen and Martin Kosut claimed the doubles point for the Red Storm with a tiebreaker win at the No. 3 position. The duo topped Moshe Levy and Mark Piro, 9-8 (7-2). At the No. 1 spot, Binghamton???s Faisal Mohamed and Alex Dobrin defeated Louis Desmarteaux and Alex Svetlakov, 8-6.
In singles play, the Red Storm won its next three points at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots. Svetlakov topped Clavel (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 2 position, while Kosut bounced back from a 5-7 first set loss to defeat Levy (5-7, 6-1, 6-0) at the No. 3 spot. In No. 5 singles action, sophomore Jordan Talbot beat Bonnet (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) to win the match.
Binghamton picked up its three points at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots. Bearcats captain Mohamed topped Vlasenko (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) at the No. 1 position, while Dobrin defeated Green (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) at the No. 4 spot. Binghamton???s Piro earned the squad its last point at the No. 6 spot with a (6-4, 7-6) victory over senior Claudio Halim.
The Red Storm returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 against the Highlanders of Radford University. First serve is scheduled for noon.
