St. John's Men's Tennis Defeats Rutgers, 7-0

The St. John's men's tennis team stormed past Rutgers, 7-0, Saturday afternoon as it registered its first win against a BIG EAST opponent this season. The Red Storm returned to .500, by evening out its record to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
St. John's won two of three doubles matches to take the early advantage. At the No. 2 spot, Louis Desmarteaux and Martin Kosut defeated Andrew Tervooren and Dale Madan, 8-4. Meanwhile, Alex Svetlakov and Derek Wallensteen topped Rohan Patkar and Ilya Kazakin-Kuteyev, 8-3, at third doubles.
Rutgers prevented a St. John's sweep of the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 spot. Arjun Vaidya and Matthew Fawcett were victorious over Artem Vlasenko and Tom Green, 8-7.
In singles action, the Red Storm recorded wins in just two sets at all six spots. Senior captain Desmarteaux topped Vaidya (6-3, 6-1) at first singles, while sophomore Vlasenko defeated Fawcett (6-3, 6-0) at the No. 2 spot.
In third singles action, sophomore Svetlakov overpowered Tervooren (6-3, 6-4). Sophomore Jordan Talbot registered a win for St. John's at the No. 4 spot. He toppled Patkar (6-2, 6-2).
Freshman Wallensteen stormed past Kazakin-Kuteyev (6-0, 6-2) at the No. 5 spot and senior Green was victorious at sixth singles with a (6-0, 6-2) score over Madan.
