St. John??' Men??' Tennis Defeats Connecticut, 6-1

The St. John???s men???s tennis team pushed its season-best winning streak to nine matches as it defeated Connecticut, 6-1, Friday morning. The Red Storm improved to 12-6 on the season and 4-1 against BIG EAST opponents.
The Red Storm won the early advantage by taking two of the three doubles matches. Doubles pair Louis Desmarteaux and Martin Kosut moved up to the No. 1 spot and defeated Joe Goldstein and Ben Schueler, 8-7. At third doubles, Derek Wallensteen and Jordan Talbot topped Joel Gamoran and Michael Bobitski, 8-5. With the doubles point secured in St. John???s favor, the No. 2 doubles match retired.
In singles play, senior captain Desmarteaux topped Goldstein (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Artem Vlasenko blanked Joey Michaels (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles. At the No. 3 spot, freshman Kosut defeated Schueler (6-2, 7-5).
The Red Storm went on to win two more points at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Sophomore Talbot continued his winning ways, improving his streak to 10 matches with a three set win over Christian Malerba (6-1, 5-7, 10-4) at fourth singles. Freshman Wallensteen returned to the courts to sweep Aaron Ribchinsky (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6 singles.
The Huskies earned their lone point at the No. 5 singles match. Tom Cook defeated Claudio Halim (7-6, 5-7, 10-8).
