St. John's senior catcher Brendan Monaghan was named a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American Athlete of the Year, an award that recognizes dedication to strength training and conditioning.
This year, the NSCA awarded 239 student-athletes from 165 schools with the award. Monaghan was selected by Director of Strength and Conditioning Rob Basile, who said, "Brendan has done a tremendous job with his strength and conditioning training. His hard work, dedication and positive attitude towards his training sessions have allowed him to make significant gains in strength, power and conditioning. The success that he has achieved in his training has carried over to the baseball diamond and has significantly improved his throwing and hitting power."
The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program is in its 28th year, and is made possible by a grant from Power Systems, Inc., a Knoxville, Tenn., fitness product leader.
Monaghan has been a starter behind the plate for each of the last two seasons, leading the Red Storm in batting in both campaigns. This season, the senior captain is hitting .385 with a .470 on-base percentage and eight stolen bases on eight attempts.
