Softball Takes Three Game Win Streak Into BIG EAST Weekend

??? The St. John???s softball team heads into its BIG EAST doubleheader weekend on a three-game win streak. The Red Storm will host the Syracuse Orange on Saturday, April 21, at Noon, before welcoming the Pittsburgh Panthers on Sunday, April 22. First pitch for the St. John???s vs. Pittsburgh games is scheduled for 11 a.m.
??? The Red Storm cruised to a pair of road wins over Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday, April 19, 15-4 and 9-1. St. John???s wasted no time getting on the board, scoring 11 runs in the first inning of game one and five runs during game two. Senior Loren Anguiano led the offensive onslaught with three home runs for the day. In game two of the twin bill, Anguiano and sophomore Roxann Struble hit back-to-back home runs in the first and second innings. The duo accounted for five RBI apiece.
??? In its last outing, Syracuse lost both games of its doubleheader against the Louisville Cardinals at Skytop Stadium on Saturday, April 14, ending a season-high five-game winning streak. The Orange lost 7-2 in the first game, and 6-2 in the second. Syracuse has won three of the last four meetings against the Red Storm and is 6-5 all-time versus St. John???s. The two teams split last season???s series with Syracuse winning game one, 5-0, and the Red Strom taking game two, 7-4.
??? The Pittsburgh Panthers also come into this weekend???s game on a two-game losing streak. Pittsburgh was swept by Penn State, 3-2 (8) and 6-0, in a pair of non-conference home games. The Panthers were held scoreless in game two and were out-hit 9-4. Last season, St. John???s and Pittsburgh split at pair of games at Pittsburgh. The Red Storm earned its first BIG EAST victory of the season in game one against the Panthers, 9-4, before falling 5-2 in the second game.

??? The Red Storm softball team dominated a pair of road games at Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday, April 19. St. John???s scored 11 runs in the first inning of game one en route to a 15-4 victory. Game two was more of the same as the Red Storm jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first frame, ultimately taking the game, 9-1.
??? Senior Loren Anguiano and sophomore Roxann Struble accomplished an exciting feet when the duo blasted back-to-back home runs in consecutive innings during game two. Anguiano finished the day with three home runs and five RBI while Struble had two long-balls, five RBI and five runs.
??? At the plate, Brandy Reyes went five-for-six with runs and an RBI. She fired her first career home run in game one of the doubleheader.
??? Lisa Geer and Kim Lerch picked up their sixth and seventh wins of the season, respectively. Geer struck out eight in her second win in as many days, bringing her two-day total to 17. Game two saw Lerch earn her second consecutive win as she shut down Fairleigh Dickinson. She has not allowed more than one run in either of her victories.

??? Senior Loren Anguiano is currently second on the team with a .304 batting average and has been hot at the plate as of late. She leads her team with 11 doubles, which is also a career high for the third baseman. Anguiano is tied for first in the BIG EAST in doubles, fourth in runs scored (26) and fifth in total bases (61).
??? Rookie Brandy Reyes continues to be an asset to the Red Storm in the heart of the lineup as she leads the team with a .381 batting average and 48 hits. She is sixth among BIG EAST leaders in batting average and seventh in hits. So far this season, Reyes has also posted eleven runs, seven doubles and 14 RBI. The catcher has shown no signs of nerves in BIG EAST action as she hitting .421 with a pair of doubles and a .474 slugging percentage.
??? Senior second baseman Tami Hill has become one of the Red Storm???s most reliable hitters as she has now hit safely in St. John???s last 10 games. She is third on the team with a .285 batting average and 37 hits. Her 10 doubles is second best on the squad and ranks third in the BIG EAST. Co-captain Bionka King has continued her impressive play as the starting left fielder. She is fourth on the team with a .279 batting average and has 29 hits and 14 RBI overall.
??? Roxann Struble has been outstanding for the Red Storm in recent play and made the BIG EAST???s Honor Roll for the week of April 2. She tied for fifth in the conference for home runs (6) and eighth in RBI (23). Struble is second on the team in BIG EAST games with a .405 batting average and 15 hits and leads her squad with 11 runs, five home runs and 15 RBI. Overall, the infielder is hitting .274 at the plate and leads the team with 28 RBI and eight home runs.
??? Newcomers Shauntaine Harris, Ona Halladay, Spring Montgomery and Tiffany D???Alessandro have each had their moment to shine for the Red Storm. Harris???s 15 RBI is third best on the team and she has notched three home runs to go with her superb play in centerfield. Halladay posted her second double of the season in a conference game against Seton Hall and has 12 hits so far this season. Montgomery has driven in nine RBI and three doubles, spending time as the first basemen and the designated player while D???Alessandro has seen time in three BIG EAST games. She is hitting .333 over those three games with one hit and one run.
??? In the circle, senior Kim Lerch has tossed 136.0 innings so far this season and is fifth in the BIG EAST in innings pitched. She has set a new career-high in strikeouts with 78 and earned her first conference win of the season against Seton Hall.
??? Junior pitcher Lisa Geer has struck out 101 batters so far this season and is on course to break her career high of 138.
Scouting Syracuse
??? The Syracuse Orange enter this weekend???s contests with a 5-7 BIG EAST conference record and a 15-26 record overall. The Orange are currently in seventh place in the conference and rank fifth among the league???s leaders in batting average. As a team, the squad is hitting .279 while its pitching staff owns a 5.12 ERA.
??? All-BIG EAST selection Tony McCorkle leads Syracuse with a .331 batting average and 39 hits. Rachel Tilford has a team high 22 RBI, seven doubles and five home runs for the Orange. In BIG EAST action, Chanel Roehner has been getting the job done for Syracuse as she is hitting .424 over 11 games with 14 hits and six RBI.
??? Roehner also leads the Orange in the circle with a team low 4.73 ERA. Pitcher Brittany Gardner has struck out 111 over 144.1 innings pitched and posts a 5.48 ERA. Overall, opponents are hitting .320 against Syracuse???s pitching staff.
Scouting Pittsburgh
??? The Pittsburgh Panthers are 2-9 in conference play and are 16-29 overall. The Panthers are 6-11 on the road this season but have not won a game at Red Storm Field, dating back to the 2001 season.
??? Jessica Gignon currently leads the team in batting average (.266), runs (23), and doubles (8). Teammate Alex Shoemaker has a team-high 18 RBI while Sheena Hellon and Samantha Card have three home runs a peice. As a team, the Panthers are hitting .280.
??? In the circle, Kayla Zinger boasts a 3.17 ERA overall 110.1 innings pitched. She has struck out a team high 88 batters while holding opponents to a .274 batting average. Meghan Bostick has a 3.45 ERA with five victories to date. She is just one strikeout behind Zinger with 88 and has allowed only 67 hits this season.
