St. John??' Softball Splits With Villanova

The St. John???s softball team split a pair of games against BIG EAST foe Villanova on Thursday, dropping a 1-0 game one contest before taking a 3-0 victory in the second game. Senior pitcher Kim Lerch earned her fourth consecutive win in the circle for the Red Storm, tossing a complete seven innings and allowing only two hits. Junior co-captain Bionka King went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, an RBI and one run scored for the day while rookie Shauntaine Harris was 5-for-7, blasting her first collegiate triple. St. John???s is now 17-33 overall, 6-12 in the BIG EAST.
Game One:
The Red Storm started swinging the bats early as Shauntaine Harris and Bionka King posted back-to-back hits in the top of the second inning. St. John???s loaded the bases but was not able to plate any runs.
Villanova scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the frame off of Danielle Maricle???s RBI double.
St. John???s starting pitcher Lisa Geer threw six innings of one-run ball but the offense couldn???t put anything together as the team lost to Villanova, 1-0.
Harris posted three of the team???s five hits, while King and Brandy Reyes had a single a piece.
Game Two:
Junior Danielle Estrada led off the top of the second inning with a double to left field to trigger St. John???s offense. Harris stayed hot in game two, driving in Estrada with a her first collegiate triple. The Red Storm took a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Harris started out the fourth with single up the middle and Spring Montgomery reached on a fielder???s choice. King doubled to score Montgomery and came across the plate on a Villanova error to post St. John???s third run of the game.
Senior pitcher Kim Lerch was outstanding in a must-win game for the Red Storm. She allowed only two hits while keeping Villanova off the board for a complete seven innings. Lerch has now picked up a win in her last four starts and given up only three earned runs overall.
The Red Storm will enjoy more than a week off before heading into its final BIG EAST doubleheader weekend of the season. St. John???s will host USF at Noon on May 5 before welcoming Louisville at 11 a.m. on May 6. May 6 will serve as Alumni and Senior Day.
