The St. John???s softball team split its final doubleheader of the season on Sunday, May 6, against Louisville. Game One:
Starting pitchers Lisa Geer and Kristen Wadwell went the distance in game one, shutting out the offense until the Red Storm struck in the sixth inning.
Loren Anguiano and Roxann Struble fired back-to-back singles in the bottom of the frame to put runners in scoring position for the first time in the game. Danielle Estrada???s RBI-single scored Anguiano and gave St. John???s a 1-0 lead against the Cardinals.
Geer cruised to her eighth win of the season, allowing only four hits and striking out five in the 1-0 victory.
Game Two:
Louisville and St. John???s once again kept the game scoreless until the middle of the fifth inning. St. John???s loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth frame as Brandy Reyes started out the side with a hard-hit single to the center field fence. Estrada was walked and Shauntaine Harris followed with an infield single to load the bags. The Cardinals recorded three consecutive outs after that to get out of the jam, but the Red Storm was back to work in the fifth.
Anguiano reached first base on an error by Louisville???s second baseman and made it to third on another hit from Reyes. Estrada, who drove in St. John???s only run in game one, rocketed a double to left-center field, scoring Anguiano and Reyes.
Senior pitcher Kim Lerch was solid through five innings, striking out three and giving up three hits. She ran into trouble in the top of the sixth as Louisville???s offense came alive. She was replaced by Geer after the Cardinal???s took a 5-2 lead.
Estrada continued her outstanding play at the plate with a three-RBI double that tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. The two team???s took the tied game into the eighth inning when Louisville???s Candi Hicks led off the frame with a solo-home run. Kristi Cunningham added insurance run with a sacrifice fly two batters later.
