Highlighting the St. John's University women's soccer team's 2007 schedule will be a home contest against defending BIG EAST Champion and National Runner-Up Notre Dame and at least four matchups with teams that advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament, head coach Ian Stone announced Wednesday.
Fresh off its school-record five BIG EAST victories in 2006, St. John's returns 22 players and 10 starters from last year's team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
Head coach and 2006 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Stone, returns for his 14th season.
The 2007 campaign gets underway at Belson Stadium on Aug. 31, when the Red Storm hosts Fairleigh Dickinson in the season-opener following Aug. 21 and Aug. 25 home exhibition contests against Stony Brook and Hofstra.
Non-conference matches against Cornell (Sept. 2), at Sacred Heart (Sept. 7) and vs. Miami [Ohio] (Sept. 9) follow, before St. John's heads to the University of Buffalo Tournament to face Vermont and Maine.
The first league action takes place on Sept. 21 at Belson Stadium, when St. John's hosts BIG EAST and in-state rival Syracuse at 6 p.m.
The Red Storm then heads to Manhattan for a Sunday match at Columbia on Sept. 23 before getting into the bulk of the BIG EAST schedule.
Home league games at Belson Stadium are: Pittsburgh (Sept. 30), DePaul (Oct. 5), Notre Dame (Oct. 7), Connecticut (Oct. 26) and Providence (Oct. 28).
Road BIG EAST games will be played at West Virginia (Sept. 28), Marquette (Oct. 12), South Florida (Oct. 14), Rutgers (Oct. 19) and Seton Hall (Oct. 21).
The BIG EAST Tournament semifinals and finals will be held Nov. 9-11 in Morgantown, W. Va., following the first and second rounds at campus sites.
