Senior outfielder Anthony Smith was chosen in the 21st round of the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday, going with the 643rd overall pick to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Smith hit .313 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI in 2007 and finished his three-year career with the Red Storm with a .320 average and 22 home runs, the sixth-most in school history.
Smith was a first team All-BIG EAST choice as a junior in 2006 and earned Freshman All-America honors as a rookie at George Washington University in 2004. He has seen time as a first baseman, designated hitter and outfielder, but has also performed two-way duties as a left-handed pitcher. The Diamondbacks selected the Katonah, N.Y., native as a position player, and he is expected to begin his career as an outfielder.
Smith helped lead the Red Storm to a pair of BIG EAST regular season titles, a school record 41 wins in both 2005 and 2007 and appeared in two NCAA Regionals. In 2007, St. John's made the program's 30th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. No. 3 seed St. John's fell to No. 2 Clemson, 3-2, in its tournament opener, then defeated No. 4 VCU, 5-4, on a walk-off home run by Chris Anninos, and lost to top-seeded Coastal Carolina, 6-5, in an elimination game on June 3.
