Blunt Named To BIG EAST Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll

QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior tri-captain LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) was named to the BIG EAST volleyball weekly honor roll for the fifth week of the season, the conference announced on Monday. The honor comes after another week of 3-0 sweeps for the Red Storm, who improved its overall record to 17-2 (2-0 BIG EAST) with wins over Fordham, Seton Hall, and Villanova.
Blunt provided explosive offense as well as tremendous defense this past week for the Red Storm as she led the team with 13 total blocks and a .421 hitting percentage, and ranked a close second in kills with 30. She had seven big blocks and a .500 hitting percentage in the team's final non-conference match of the season against Fordham on Tuesday, while registering nine kills. In the BIG EAST opener against Seton Hall she had 10 kills on 17 attempts with only two attack errors for a .471 hitting percentage, as well as a block and an assist. In the last match of the weekend at Villanova, Blunt recorded 11 kills and a .346 hitting percentage to go along with five total blocks.
Blunt leads the team and ranks eight among all BIG EAST players in blocks per game, with 1.19. She ranks second on the team and in the conference with a .385 hitting percentage. She also ranks third on the team in kills per game with 3.31.
Also representing St. John's among BIG EAST individual leaders are seniors Hui Ping Huang and Wioleta Leszczynska, as well as junior Lena Yee. Huang ranks first in hitting percentage with an astonishing .422 mark, and is fifth overall with 4.27 kills per game. Leszczynska remains the BIG EAST leader in assists per game with 13.66, while Yee is ranked sixth in digs per game with 4.44.
The Red Storm sits atop the BIG EAST standings having swept both conference opponents to start league play 2-0. Its .895 overall winning percentage ranks them higher than every other conference school. Among other schools in the BIG EAST, St. John's ranks first in hitting percentage (.275), kills per game (17.03), and assists per game (15.95). The team ranks second in opponents' hitting percentage, keeping them at only .155, and is also second in digs per game with 16.46. Led by Blunt, the team stands at fourth with 2.53 blocks per game.
The Red Storm returns to action this weekend when the team plays host to BIG EAST foes Pittsburgh on Saturday and West Virginia on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
