STJ Men's Tennis Finishes Play At Columbia Classic

NEW YORK - The St. John's men's tennis team ended play at the Columbia Classic on Sunday at the Dick Savitt Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Columbia University. The Red Storm finished with a 6-9 record in singles action and a 3-3 doubles mark at the event, which featured players from 12 schools.
Junior Martin Kosut and sophomore Pavel Cenry led STJ in singles action, as each tallied 2-1 records and reached the semifinals in their respective draws. The doubles team of Kosut and senior Alex Svetlakov also recorded a 2-1 record, en route to a semifinal finish in the A doubles draw.
Kosut defeated Josh Goldstein of Cornell (6-1, 7-5) and Penn's Alex Vasin (7-6, 7-6) in the first two rounds of the B singles draw, but fell to the Quakers' Jason Lin in the semifinals (6-3, 6-1). In C singles, Cerny opened play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Markus Bolinder from Fairleigh Dickinson, then defeated Binghamton's Evan Algier, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the semis. There, Marc Asch from Cornell won, 6-2, 6-2, to end Cerny's run.
In other singles action, freshman Milo Hauk finished with a 1-1 record as he reached the quarterfinals of the B singles draw. Senior Gustavo Loza lost his opener in the C singles draw to Justen Roth of Penn, but then rebounded to win his first in a promotion to the B singles consolation bracket over Doppelt from Cornell, 6-4, 6-0. Loza finished play with a 1-2 record.
In doubles action, Kosut and Svetlakov were victorious in their first two matches against Adam Gart and Michael Syer from Sacred Heart (8-2) and UTA's Brieuc Hamon and Adam Srkala (8-3) in the A doubles draw. In the semifinals, Cornell's Kyle Doppelt and Josh Goldstein defeated the Red Storm's pair, 8-4. The St. John's tandem of Hauk and Loza picked up a victory in the first round of the B doubles draw over Lin and Roth of Penn, 8-2, but lost to Cornell's Jon Jaklitsch and Jon Fife, 9-7, in the semifinals.
The Red Storm will return to the courts on Thursday, Oct. 16, when the squad travels to New Haven, Conn. on the campus of Yale University for the 2008 ITA Regional Championships.
