QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team will close out its regular season schedule and look to clinch a berth to the BIG EAST Tournament when it travels to face Providence and Connecticut this weekend. The Red Storm will play the Friars on Friday at 3 p.m. and the Huskies on Sunday at 1 p.m.
• Both St. John's road games will feature live stats that can be accessed on RedStormSports.com.
• Currently, the Red Storm sits in fourth place in the BIG EAST American Division with 11 points. The top five teams from each division earn a berth to the conference tournament. Two teams in the American Division have already clinched a berth - West Virginia and Marquette - while the final three spots in the division are up for grabs between UConn, STJ, USF, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
A Look At The Competition
• The Friars posted a 0-2 record in their last two games. On Oct. 17, Providence lost 5-0 to No. 1 Notre Dame and then lost a close contest, 1-0, to DePaul on Oct. 19. Providence's record entering the weekend stands at 5-7-3, 0-6-3 BIG EAST, and is mathematically eliminated from earning a berth to the BIG EAST Tournament. The meeting between the Friars and the Red Storm is the 21st all-time, with St. John's holding the slight edge, 10-9-1. In the last eight meetings, the Red Storm has posted a slate of 7-0-1.
• The Huskies enter the weekend with a 5-8-4, 3-3-3 BIG EAST record and sit in third place in the BIG EAST American Division with 12 points. UConn is coming off a weekend where it split games, defeating DePaul, 3-0, on Oct. 17 and then losing to No. 1 Notre Dame, 2-0, on Oct. 19. The Huskies own the all-time series with the Red Storm, 14-2, however, the Red Storm won last year's meeting, 1-0, in double overtime.
Honors Across The Board
• With a pair of victories over then-No. 15 Rutgers and Seton Hall Oct. 17-19, three St. John's players were honored for their achievements on the field.
• Nicole Doran was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week. The junior was a huge part of the Red Storm's defensive efforts. The defender played the full 90 minutes and helped shutout No. 15 Rutgers in a 1-0 victory on Oct. 17. Against Seton Hall on Oct. 19, Doran scored the game-winning goal - the first of her career - and played all 90 minutes as the Red Storm posted the shutout to set a new school record with 10 shutouts on the year.
• Kristin Russell earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors. Russell had another stellar weekend in net for the Red Storm as she added two more shutouts to her season total. The freshman set a new Red Storm single-season record with 10 shutouts this year, surpassing Jaime Beran's record of eight set in 2006.
• Courtney Lane earned the BigAppleSoccer.com Goal of the Week honor. The defender scored her first-career goal and the game winner in the 55th minute against the Scarlet Knights in a 1-0 victory. On the weekend, Lane was the team's offensive leader with three points. On Sunday, she helped the Red Storm post its third-straight win, picking up the assist on the game-winner in a 2-0 victory over Seton Hall.
