Red Storm Softball Takes Two In STJ Fall Tournament

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's its second fall tournament of the year at Red Storm Field in Queens, N.Y. as the team took on the Sacred Heart Pioneers and the Fairfield Stags. The Red Storm opened the day of play, downing the Pioneers 6-1 and took on the Stags in third game, winning 8-0.
In game one versus Sacred Heart, St. John's received a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Linzee Sumrall. The right-hander struck out seven batters in seven innings, allowing on one earned run on six hits.
The bats responded as well as freshman Shannan Valentin went 2-for-2 with two runs and three stolen bases. Senior Roxy Struble had a great game, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Freshman centerfielder Kristi Cady was solid for the Red Storm going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
In the team's second game of the day versus Fairfield, sophomore Kat Lawrence dominated the Stags pitching a complete game no-hitter, striking out 14 of the 25 batters she faced.
The Red Storm offense stayed hot as Valentin continued to show off her speed and added two more stolen bases while going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore right fielder Chelsea Durning went 1-for-1 in the game but added two runs and RBI. Sophomore Kacee Cox gave the Red Storm two RBI and went 1-for-2 versus the Stags.
Head coach Amy Kvilhaug and the St. John's softball team hosts its annual 100-Out fundraiser game Thursday morning Oct. 9 at 7:45 a.m. The game will be held at Red Storm Field in Queens, N.Y. and all are invited to attend.
