St. John's Softball Falls In Two Close Contests

Santa Barbara, Calif. - On the second day of the Tournament by the Beach at UC Santa Barbara, the Red Storm played well but came up short in two tough match-ups. St. John's fell to the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara 3-0 and lost to Portland State 4-3 in eight innings.
"We are really starting to play better," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "We are extremely competitive and are putting ourselves in a position to win games Our pitching has come around as well and as a team we are starting to play the kind of softball we want to. "
In the Red Storm's first game of the day versus UC Santa Barbara, freshman Chelsea Plimpton started and pitched well, holding the Gauchos to three runs while striking out five in her second complete game effort of the season. The Red Storm offense was able to get runners on base, recording six hits and four walks in the game, but could not push them across the plate.
In its second game of the day against Portland State, the Red Storm fought back to tie the game at two in the fifth inning after being down early when freshman outfielder Chelsea Durning singled to score Bionka King, but fell to the Vikings 4-3 in extra frames. Freshman starter Kat Lawrence had one of her best outings of the year, going eight innings and striking out eight.
St. John's takes on Portland State tomorrow at 10 a.m. pacific time in the final day of the Tournament by the Beach.
