QUEENS, N.Y. - Kia Wright scored 14 of her 23 points in the second half, but that wasn't enough to match the Villanova shooting from beyond the arc, as the Wildcats picked up the 69-66 win over St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
In addition to leading the team with 23 points, Wright reached and surpassed the 1,400 point plateau for her career and moved into sole possession of fifth place in the St. John's all-time scoring list. The senior was 9-of-13 from the field and also collected four rebounds and five assists. Monique McLean added 14 points to tally her fourth-straight double-figure scoring contest, and Joy McCorvey chipped in 10 points.
The Red Storm (12-11, 3-7 BIG EAST) found itself trailing at the half by three, 31-28. St. John's battled back from an early deficit to eventually take its first lead of the game, 23-21, at 4:13, but VU's Stacie Witman could not be stopped as she scored five-straight points to put the Wildcats back in front. Villanova went up by six thanks to a Siobhan O'Conner layup at 1:52, but McLean cut the deficit in half with a 3-pointer with 1:33 to go in the frame.
In the second half, the long-distance shooting of Villanova (13-10, 3-7 BIG EAST) hurt a Red Storm comeback, as the team shot 53.3 from beyond the arc on 8-of-15 shooting. Each time St. John's would get close to the Wildcat lead, a VU player would counter with a good long-distance shot. In the last 10 minutes of the game alone, Villanova was 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. The closest the Red Storm came within the lead was when a Kelly McManmon 3-pointer tied the game, 58-58, with 5:05 remaining. However, Lisa Karcic answered with her own long-range shot to put VU back in front.
The Red Storm will continue its homestand when it hosts Louisville on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
