QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team took full advantage of playing on its home field for the first time this year, winning two decisive games over the Peahens of St. Peter's. Game one was dominated by pitching and saw the Red Storm take a 2-0 victory. This was not the case in the second game as the Red Storm offense exploded, run-ruling St. Peter's in five innings, 13-2.
"Getting two home wins was big for us," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "Pitching won our first game and offense won the second for us. It was good to see two different aspects of our game step up when we needed it."
In game one, St. John's jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when freshman third baseman Kacee Cox rocketed a double off the center field fence to score Bionka King. Cox also scored the second run of the game in the bottom of the third when she scored on an error.
Two runs proved to be all St. John's needed as freshman pitcher Kat Lawrence enjoyed the best game of her young career, earning her third victory this season. Lawrence tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits, walking one and striking out 15 of the 24 batters she faced.
Game two was not a pitchers duel. After holding the Red Storm bats in check in game one, the St. Peter's pitchers could not contain the offense any longer. After giving up two runs to the Peahens in the first inning, St. John's stormed back in the bottom of the frame, plating four. The two runs given up in the first by the Red Storm were all the Peahens could muster as senior Lisa Geer struck out six batters in just five innings.
Cox continued her great day in the second game, recording two RBI and two runs. Freshman Chelsea Durning, batting out of the two spot in the lineup, was able to score three runs in the game and went 1-for-2 with two walks. Junior Melissa Pilley and sophomore Brandy Reyes both had two hits and two runs in the second game of the day.
Junior Roxy Struble continues to flourish after returning to the cleanup spot in the order. In the second game of the doubleheader, Struble went 3-for-3 with two runs and 5 RBI, tying a career high. On the day, graduate student Alyson Funn went 3-for-6 with a run, a double and a stolen base. Cox finished the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with 3 runs, a double and 3 RBI.
The Red Storm will now travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on BIG EAST rival Syracuse on Friday in the College of Charleston Tournament. While in South Carolina, St. John's will also face Binghamton and Charleston.
