Every college soccer player knows the fall season is filled with many things; the excitement of an upcoming game, a much anticipated battle with a rival, the boisterous crowds or the adrenaline rush that comes from hearing your warm-up CD. All of these are things are aspects a collegiate soccer player might miss during the spring season. Yet, in a surprising way, I feel that our team has discovered a unique sort of excitement during this spring season.
Aside from the more reluctant excitement from players asking what exercises will they be doing today, the excitement I'm referring to is the endless possibilities and opportunities of the upcoming fall season. On a calendar, it might be half a year away, but in the hearts and eyes of my teammates and myself, it might as well be tomorrow night. After all, what other factor is going to be powerful enough to keep pushing us harder than the day before?
The only other factor I can think of that could challenge the power of such anticipation is the support our friendships give us. When I hear my teammates talking about next season, see them perfecting their technique in their free time or drenched in sweat from an extra workout, their energy and dedication inspires me. In this way, we have ensured that the spring season does not become dull. I'm very proud of all my teammates and so grateful for their ability to keep me and each other going strong.
Much of our excitement can be attributed to the fact that our focus this spring has been to define our style of play and figuring out exactly what kind of team we want to be. We are 25 people moving in the same direction, which as one might imagine, creates an amazingly powerful force.
