Red Storm Softball Deals With The Cards

Louisville, Ky. - The St. John's softball team (13-19, 2-4) concluded its BIG EAST weekend this Sunday at Ulmer Stadium on the campus of Louisville. The Red Storm took on the Cardinals (18-12, 4-0) in a doubleheader and came up one run short in a tough pitchers duel in the first game and staying tied with U of L till the seventh inning before falling 3-2.
It took till the bottom of the third, but Louisville was the first to get the board when back-to-back doubles, their first hits of the game, gave them the 1-0 lead. St. John's was able to get out of the inning with one out and runners of first and second when a Cardinal batter flied out and center fielder Shauntaine Harris who gunned down the runner tagging from second.
On an overcast day in Kentucky, the Red Storm got a hit by freshman Chelsea Durning, the first batter of the game, but was then shutout for five straight innings by Cardinal pitching.
In the top of the seventh, freshman Kacee Cox led off with St. John's second hit of the day. Junior Roxy Struble laid down the sacrifice bunt to put pinch runner Melissa Pilley in scoring position. Sophomore Brandy Reyes then singled down the third base line and Pilley was able to round third and head for home. A deadeye throw from the left fielder caught the runner as she stretched to reach the plate and end the game at 1-0.
Freshman pitcher Kat Lawrence threw a great game for the Red Storm. The rookie went six innings giving up only five hits to last year's BIG EAST Champ, while striking out six.
In game two, St. John's picked up the pace and got off to a fast start. Cox blasted a shot over the left field fence for her fifth home run of the year and gave St. John's the early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Cardinals tied the game with two outs on an RBI double to right center. Freshman starter Linzee Sumrall came at the next batter and induced a foul ball to the third baseman.
After Louisville took back the lead in the bottom of the third on RBI single, St. John's got a double by senior co-captain Danielle Estrada to lead off the top of the fourth. Cox was able to reach after a wild pitch and Estrada advanced to third to give the Red Storm runners on the corners. A batter later, Reyes delivered with a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at 2.
The game went scoreless for three innings when in the bottom of the seventh; Louisville got a game winning RBI to take the game 3-2.
St. John's returns to Queens to take on Army on April 2 at Red Storm Field. First game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
