QUEENS, N.Y. - The 2007 BIG EAST Champion St. John's volleyball team opened up its spring schedule on Saturday at the Hofstra Invitational and finished first among six squads.
The Red Storm played just two games against each opponent, defeating Fordham, Fairfield and C.W. Post each by 2-0 scores, and splitting play against Stony Brook and Hofstra, 1-1. St. John's ended with a 4-0-2 record and with eight game wins was named the champions of the tournament. Junior Valeria Kovaleva had a dominant outing at the tournament and the squad also received tremendous efforts from Wioleta Leszczynska, Lena Yee, and Casie Brooks. The Red Storm competed for the first time since falling just short, 3-2, in the regional semifinal round of the NCAA Tournament back on December 7 against USC.
The volleyball team continues its spring play at another tournament hosted by Hofstra, the third annual "Spike Out Breast Cancer" Tournament, scheduled for April 12. The Red Storm finishes out the spring with a tournament at LIU on April 29.
