QUEENS, N.Y. - Former St. John's women's basketball standouts Kia Wright and Tiina Sten have been invited to participate in select Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) team training camps. Wright was invited to the New York Liberty's while Sten was asked to attend the Los Angeles Sparks training camp.
"It was exciting getting the calls from the Liberty and the Sparks inviting Kia and Tiina to camp," said head coach Kim Barnes Arico. "Former player Greeba Barlow has attended camps in the past, but this is the first time that the actual team has reached out and personally invited two of my players. This really says a lot about both Kia and Tiina and our program. We are excited for them, hope they have a great a great week and hope they will be able to extend their careers."
The tandem combined to bring the St. John's women's basketball team to four-straight BIG EAST conference tournaments, two Women's National Invitation appearances and to the Red Storm's first NCAA Tournament berth in over 17 years. In addition, they finished their careers at St. John's by helping lead the team to a quarterfinal appearance in the WNIT, which was the furthest a STJ team under Barnes Arico has advanced in postseason play.
Wright just participated in the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp in Tampa, Fla. She finished her senior campaign averaging 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists and was selected to the All-BIG EAST second team for her efforts. The Copiague, N.Y., native finished her career at St. John's ranked in 11 career categories, including finishing fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,536 points, while holding the free throw record of 437. In addition, she is the only player in Red Storm history to record over 1,500 points and 400 assists.
Sten has been an integral part to the team during her four-year career at STJ and concludes her career ranked fifth with 95 career blocks and tied for eighth with a 34.6 3-point average. She finished her career strong for the Red Storm, averaging 6.8 points and 3.0 rebounds.
