QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team (20-35) took on its local rival the Hofstra Pride (36-10) in the final game of the year for the Red Storm. The Pride offense struck early and hard and its pitching kept St. John's off the board, taking the game 8-0 in five innings.
St. John's got down early as erratic pitching allowed Hofstra to plate four runs on just two hits in the top of the first inning. Senior tri-captain Lisa Geer entered the game in relief to get the Red Storm out of further trouble.
Geer got the Red Storm offense started in the bottom of the second inning, hitting a single through the left side after sophomore Brandy Reyes was hit by a pitch. Sophomore center fielder Shauntaine Harris singled to center to load the bases with two outs for St. John's. Hofstra's Sara Michalowski was able to work her way out of trouble, getting the final out of the inning on a strikeout.
The Pride struck again in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases with one out, Hofstra was able to score a run on fielder's choice to the shortstop. With two outs and runners on the corners, the next batter was able to get a hold of the St. John's offering and just cleared the right field fence, giving the Pride a 8-0 lead.
The St. John's offense could not regroup in time as Hofstra relief pitcher Courtney Oliver allowed no hits, one walk and struck out two in two innings of work.
