QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's men's soccer alums continue to establish themselves in the professional ranks. Shalrie Joseph, Chris Wingert and Stefani Miglioranzi of the MLS and Chris Corcoran, Andre Schmid and Bill Gaudette of USL-1 headline the latest update on former St. John's soccer players in the pros.
Joseph, a midfielder for the New England Revolution, is making his fifth-straight appearance in the annual all-star game. This is the third-consecutive season that Joseph has been a First XI selection as one of the top vote getters at his position. The midfielder has played in and started 15 games for New England and has taken 16 shots, nine on goal. The Revolution currently has the best record in the MLS at 10-4-3.
Los Angeles Galaxy players David Beckham and Landon Donovan are among the other First XI all-stars. The MLS All-Stars will face historic West Ham United in the 2008 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game on Thursday, July 24 from BMO Field in Toronto, Canada. The 7 p.m. game will be televised on ESPN.
Former St. John's teammates Corcoran and Schmid, meanwhile, will face off against one another in the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals. A defender for the USL-1 Charleston Battery (8-4-3), Corcoran has played in nine games and has made six starts. Schmid, a forward for the USL-1 Seattle Sounders (5-4-8), has scored one goal in 12 games, including five starts. Charleston defeated two MLS teams on its way to the semifinals, Houston and FC Dallas. Seattle also defeated a pair of MLS teams, Chivas USA and Kansas City, to reach the semifinals. The Battery will host the Sounders in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C. The winner will face the winner of the New England Revolution and D.C. United matchup on the other side of the bracket.
Wingert, the 2003 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner, continues to see plenty of action for Real Salt Lake of the MLS. This season, the defender has played in and started 16 games and has taken five shots, three on goal. Wingert has played in 97 career MLS games.
Gaudette is currently the starting goalkeeper for the USL-1 Puerto Rico Islanders. The keeper has started every game this season for the Islanders and is 7-5-3. Gaudette has a 1.00 goals against average and has posted four shutouts.
