QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's Cross Country and Track & Field head coach Jim Hurt announced the schedule for the 2008 cross country season on Wednesday.
The fall season is highlighted by a trip to Notre Dame, Ind., for the National Catholic Championships in mid-September and hosting the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships at the end of October.
The season kicks off on the first weekend in September with the Hofstra Invitational (6K) in nearby Bethpage, N.Y. The team then travels west to Indiana on Sept. 19 to compete in the prestigious National Catholic Invitational for the second-consecutive season.
The best Catholic teams from around the country will make up the field at the National Catholic Invitational. Last season, in its first appearance in the event since 2003, the Red Storm had an impressive appearance, cracking the top 25 and finishing 23rd. Seven athletes, including four freshmen represented St. John's in the 5K race.
"The trip to Notre Dame will be great big meet experience early enough in the season to prepare our young team for the Metropolitan, BIG EAST, ECAC and NCAA Championship meets, which will all be at Van Cortlandt Park, one of our home facilities," said Hurt.
The Red Storm will travel back to the East Coast the following weekend to compete in the Fairfield Invitational (5K) in Fairfield, Conn.
The cross country championship season begins on Oct. 10 with the Metropolitan Championships (5K) at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
On Oct. 19, St. John's will host the annual STJ Fall Festival at Cunningham Park in Queens, N.Y. The event will start at 9 a.m. with a mile walk/fun run in support of breast cancer awareness. The women's race will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the men start at 10 a.m.
On Halloween, Oct. 31, the Red Storm will host the 2008 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. The women's 6K will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's 5 mile race at 11:10 a.m.
St. John's will close out the cross country season at the NCAA Northeast Regional (6K) and ECAC Championships (5K) on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22, respectively. Both meets will also be at Van Cortlandt Park.
The NCAA Championships will once again be hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 27.
