Gray Team Takes Game One Of IWS, 6-1

QUEENS, N.Y. - The gray squad defeated the red team, 6-1, in game one of the 2009 Red-Gray Intrasquad World Series. Matt Wessinger was named the player of the game after going 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the gray team.
The gray team took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after a Josh Daniel sacrifice fly and a Wessinger RBI single.
Joe Witkowski put the red squad and made it a 2-1 game in the fourth inning with an RBI double.
Jeremy Baltz and Miguel Valcarcel each walked in the fifth inning and later came around to score on a fielder's choice and a walk, respectively, as the gray team extended its lead to 4-1.
The gray team added a run in the sixth before a Wessinger RBI single in the eighth inning made it 6-1.
Bruce Kern earned the win, tallying four strikeouts and allowing just one run in 4.0 innings of work. Stephen Rivera and Steve Forster worked 5.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Nick Cenatiempo started for the red squad and allowed two runs in 2.2 innings, while tallying four strikeouts.
The teams will take to the field for game two at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.
Notes: The gray team is +9 in the IWS point system, while the red team is -7 ... the IWS point system awards and deducts points from a team based on a variety of game situations, including two-out hits and innings with less than 10 pitches.
