Red Storm is set to play three weekend games over the month of October
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Baseball has announced its three-game slate for the fall. All three matchups will take place in Queens at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The reigning BIG EAST champions and NCAA Super Regional participants will take on a trio of quality opponents from the Northeast and Atlantic corridor, in addition to the Intrasquad World Series in late October.
St. John's starts the fall schedule with a date against local foe Fordham this Saturday, Oct. 10. First pitch against the Rams is set for 11 a.m.
The Red Storm will then welcome Sacred Heart on Oct. 17 for a noon first pitch against the Pioneers. Prior to first pitch, the University and St. John's Baseball will unveil a pair of commemorative standing plaques honoring the legacies of former players Michael Weinberg and Anthony Varvaro in the flower garden near the entrance of Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Weinberg played for the Red Storm from 1986-89, winning two BIG EAST Tournament Championships and earning the 1988 Jack Kaiser Award as the tournament's most outstanding player. After signing a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers in 1989, Weinberg played two minor league seasons in the organization before joining the New York City Fire Department in 1994. Weinberg made the ultimate sacrifice along with 342 of his FDNY brethren on Sept. 11, 2001.
Varvaro was a highly touted pitching prospect out of St. John's and was drafted in the 12th round of the 2005 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners. The Staten Island native played six Major League seasons from 2010-15 and made 166 appearances, mostly coming with the Atlanta Braves. After his playing days, Varvaro joined the academy of the Port Authority Police Department. Upon graduation, he was assigned to World Trade Center Command. In the early morning hours of Sept. 11, 2022, Varvaro was on his way to participate in memorial ceremonies at the World Trade Center site when he was killed in a fatal car crash.
Head Coach Mike Hampton will speak about the impact that both heroes had on the program, and family members of Weinberg and Varvaro will throw out a ceremonial first pitch. All alumni and friends of the programs are invited to attend the ceremony.
The Johnnies will then host Maryland on Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. This is the second consecutive season that the Terrapins and the Red Storm will battle in the fall.
St. John's concludes the fall season with its annual Intrasquad World Series from Oct. 28-30.
Coach Hampton will announce the 2027 schedule at a later date. For more information about St. John's Baseball, follow the team on Instagram and X.
