QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's hosted the N4A Region I Conference Oct. 18-19 in its Carnesecca Arena offices, sharing insights of the Athletic Department's commitment to the well-being and personal growth of its student-athletes with college and high school administrators from throughout the Northeast.
"This is a great opportunity for St. John's to showcase the Student Development for Athletes program as well as the University," said Eric Rienecker, Director of Academic Support for Student Athletes. "This gives us the opportunity to share the best practices of how to help our student-athletes succeed towards graduation."
The N4A (National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics) is a diverse educational, service and professional non-profit organization that focuses on improving the academic, athletic and personal success for collegiate student-athletes.
St. John's Associate Vice President for Academic Support Services Dr. Nancy S. Kaplan ran a diversity workshop with the visiting academic administrators on Monday in the Student Development Office.
"We know the academic advisors that work in collegiate athletics have a tremendous impact on student-athletes," said Kaplan, who is also the Northeast Regional Director of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. "It was a great opportunity to showcase the programs offered through the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. We know that the programs can benefit all of the schools that were here today."
On Sunday, St. John's Assistant Director of Career Advising for Student-Athletes Justin Krass gave a presentation about creating and maintaining professional connections. Red Storm Nutritionist and Registered Dietician Mary Ellen Bingham spoke about strategies for proper student-athlete nourishment.
"We have 17 teams here at St. John's, but certainly one of the most important teams we have here is our academic advisors," St. John's Director of Athletics Chris Monasch said. "That program does professional development for our student-athletes and we're very proud of what they do."
