QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior pitcher Nick Cenatiempo spent two days in Providence, R.I., representing St. John's at the annual BIG EAST Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meetings. Each of the 16 BIG EAST member institutions selects one SAAC member to attend the meetings and report back to their campus.
"I was honored to be chosen to represent and be the voice of St. John's at the meetings," said Cenatiempo. "It was a great experience to meet with the other student-athletes and I learned a lot about NCAA and BIG EAST legislation."
The keynote speaker at this year's event was Dr. Nancy Rodriguez, who discussed sports nutrition and performance. The group also had meetings to discuss community service initiatives and review NCAA and BIG EAST legislative proposals. The committee members also spent a day volunteering with Children's Friends and Services, a non-profit group that promotes the well-being and healthy development of Rhode Island's less fortunate children. The SAAC members spent the afternoon coloring, playing games and spending time with the kids.
"This is the second year that Nick has been a team representative for SAAC and he has been very vocal and involved in promoting the work of the committee," said Lucy Pesce, Director of Leadership Development for Student-Athletes. "These meetings are a great opportunity to share ideas with other schools and bring back suggestions to implement at St. John's."
The BIG EAST SAAC serves as the voice of student-athletes and aims to improve communication with all student-athletes as well as between institutions. The committee also takes an active role in understanding and providing feedback regarding conference and NCAA legislation, while also promoting student-athlete well-being, academic achievement, personal development and community service.
