QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team came back from a 2-0 set deficit against UConn (12-11, 5-3 BIG EAST) before falling in the fifth set, 15-9 (22-25, 22-25, 28-26, 25-23, 9-15). The Red Storm was led by junior Kun Song, who tallied 22 kills and 20 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Sophomore Tamara Omelchenko recorded 17 kills in her debut for St. John's (8-15, 1-6 BIG EAST).
A kill from Song in the first set made it 19-18, with the Red Storm down one, but the Huskies would score the next three for a 22-18 lead. Two more kills from Song kept it close at 23-20, but the Huskies pulled out the 25-22 victory for a 1-0 lead in the match.
A block from Darlene Ramdin and Diana Banya tied it at 11 in the second set as the teams battled for points, tying again at 20. Omelchenko got the kill for the 21st point, but UConn scored the next three before committing a service error for a score of 23-22. UConn went on to win the set, 25-22.
The Red Storm came back in the third with a kill from Gabriela Petkova that tied the score at 23. The Huskies earned a kill before an attack error tied the score again. STJ had a service error, but a kill from Song would tie it up again at 25. Back-to-back attacking errors from both sides made it 26 all before a kill from Song and a UConn error handed St. John's the set, 28-26.
St. John's got it done again in the fourth set again, earning a 16-10 lead mid-set. The Huskies assembled a 7-3 run to make it 19-17. St. John's kept the lead throughout, using a kill from Song to take the set, 25-23.
The Huskies would take the fifth set, 15-9 after leading the set in its entirety.
Song's 22 kills were a game-high, along with a game-high 21 digs from Ashley Asing and 50 assists from Petkova, who notched her second-consecutive double-double with 19 digs. Ramdin finished with 12 kills, two aces and four blocks.
St. John's returns to USF to make up a postponed match on Sunday, Oct. 25 for a 1 p.m. match.
