Offense Propels St. John's Past Rutgers, 2-0

QUEENS, N.Y. - Kyle Hoffer tallied his first-career goal and St. John's scored two goals in a game for the third time this year in a 2-0 win against Rutgers. Tadeu Terra also converted a penalty kick for his team-leading third goal of the season. Derby Carrillo, meanwhile, made three saves to post his sixth shutout of the season for St. John's (3-2-5, 2-1-3). Alex Morgans made five saves for Rutgers (5-5-0, 3-3-0).
"We created a number of good opportunities against a well-coached Rutgers squad," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "Kyle had a great goal to get us an early lead and we defended well to notch the shutout."
St. John's created an early opportunity in the 7th minute, but David Reed fired wide. Adam Himeno had the next chance in the 13th minute, but was also off-target with his effort.
The Red Storm continued to pressure Rutgers and earned a corner kick in the 20th minute and capitalized. Sverre Wegge Gundhus took the corner and sent it towards the box. Joel Gustafsson then flicked a header towards net and Hoffer rifled a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 St. John's lead.
Rutgers had its first chance of the game in the 25th minute, but Carrillo made a save on a Bryant Knibbs shot. Carrillo stopped a shot by Robbie McLarney in the 43rd minute and St. John's led 1-0 at halftime.
St. John's came out quickly in the second half as Himeno ripped a great shot on net in the 49th minute, but Morgans made the save. Morgans followed with another save on a good shot by Terra in the 54th minute.
The Red Storm took a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute. After a Rutgers foul gave St. John's a free kick, Terra served a ball into the box. As Gustafsson went up for a header, he was fouled in the box and St. John's earned a penalty kick. Terra stepped up to take the kick and blasted a shot inside the left post.
After a save on a Terra shot in the 66th minute, Morgans made a great save to stop a Wegge Gundhus header in the 81st minute. Hoffer then sent a header just high on the ensuing corner kick.
St. John's had one final scoring chance in the 90th minute, but Morgans stopped a shot by Nelson Becerra for his fifth save of the game.
The Red Storm next travels to No. 3 USF for a 7:30 p.m. matchup on Oct. 10.
Notes: St. John's extended its home-unbeaten streak to 17 games (14-0-3) ... the Red Storm held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks ... Terra is now 4-for-4 on penalty kicks in his career ... attendance was 1,257.
