Red Storm look to keep it rolling after 5-0 win over Loyola Maryland in the season opener
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's men's soccer team will look to keep the momentum rolling on Thursday when it takes on New Hampshire for a 7 p.m. contest from Wildcat Stadium.
The matchup from Durham will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ben Altsher and Pete Webster on the call.
The Red Storm (1-0-0) strung together a dominant effort in its season opening earning a 5-0 victory at Loyola Maryland on Aug. 20. The convincing win marked the largest margin of victory in a season opener since an 8-0 win over Fairfield on Sept. 2, 1995. The five-goal margin of victory tied for the second largest in a season opener in NCAA Division I men's soccer this season. It marked just the fourth time that the Red Storm recorded five or more tallies in its debut in its program history (1990, '95, '96, 2026).
Four different players recorded goals while eight Johnnies logged a point at Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore. St. John's sprinted out to a 2-0 advantage in the first 25 minutes of the 2026 campaign and never looked back. Defensively, the Red Storm backline did not allow the Greyhounds a single shot on target as Nico Bezama picked up the clean sheet in between the pipes.
Brage Birkelund Eie led the charge in his collegiate debut. The 6-foot-5 forward tallied two goals and an assist (five points) tying for the most by any player in his first match in NCAA Division I and currently ranks tied for 13th nationally as of Aug. 25. The Oslo, Norway native was named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week and the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following his impressive first appearance at St. John's.
Fellow Norwegian Ivar Nå Aga was tabbed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, marking the first conference honor while in Queens. The defender tallied an assist on Birkelund Eie's second goal and engineered a shutout effort on the backline.
Andrew Porucznik, Luca Fargnoli and Aryeh Miller accounted for the other three goals for the Johnnies. Xavi Abeijon dished out a pair of assists on the first two tallies. The sophomore forward has registered four of his eight career points in season openers. Camron Boumsong, Na Aga, Zander Romero and Birkelund Eie posted helpers in an all-around team effort.

In last year's meeting, history was made during a 5-0 triumph for St. John's over New Hampshire on Aug. 28, 2025 at Belson Stadium. Guilherme Gomes became the first-ever freshman and first St. John's player to score four goals in a single-game since Fred Bischoff tallied five in a win over Iona on Oct. 23, 1982. The midfielder's four goals were tied for the highest total in NCAA Division I men's soccer last season. Fargnoli also added a goal in the convincing victory in Queens.
New Hampshire is coming off an impressive 3-2 road win at Syracuse and holds a 1-1 overall record through the first week of competition. On Sunday, the Wildcats outlasted the Orange in a thriller. All five goals were scored in second half with UNH's Laurin Preuss scoring the game-winner in the 82nd minute rallying from a one goal deficit in the final 11 minutes. In the season opener, New Hampshire fell at home against Colgate, 1-0, on Aug. 20
The Wildcats were predicted to finish third in the America East Preseason Coaches poll, behind preseason top-10 sides Vermont and Bryant. New Hampshire's standout duo of Max Voigt and Xahvi DeRoza were selected to the All-America East Preseason Team. Voigt, a junior defender is a two-time All-America East Second Team honoree and logged an assist in the win over Syracuse. DeRoza recorded two goals and two assists last season earning America East All-Rookie Team recognition.
Following Thursday's match, the Red Storm will return to Queens for its home opener on Tuesday against No. 13 Hofstra at 7 p.m.
