QUEENS, N.Y. - A trio of St. John's men's soccer alums have made headlines this past week in the MLS. Shalrie Joseph was a finalist for the Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player, while Chris Wingert and Stefani Miglioranzi will square off against each other in the MLS Cup Finals.
Wingert and Real Salt Lake will take on Miglioranzi and the Los Angeles Galaxy at 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 22. The game will be played at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash., and will be televised live on ESPN.
Joseph joined Jeff Cunningham (FC Dallas) and Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy) as the three finalists for the Volkswagen MLS MVP award. Though Donovan took the hardware home, Joseph led the New England Revolution (11-10-9) in both goals (8) and assists (8). The midfielder, who played in 27 games with 24 starts, set new career-highs in both categories. Joseph was also named to the MLS Best XI, an honor presented to the league's top 11 players, for the fourth-time in his career.
Wingert, the 2003 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner, has tallied three assists on the year for Western Conference champion Real Salt Lake (11-12-7). The defender has played in 30 games, while making 27 starts. RSL represents just the second MLS expansion team to reach the finals.
Miglioranzi, meanwhile, has played in 23 games for the Western Conference champion Galaxy (12-6-12) and has made 20 starts. The midfielder has tallied six shots on the year, including two on net. The Galaxy is making its sixth appearance in the finals, the most in MLS history.
