Women's Basketball Hosts BU In Home Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena on Saturday for its home opener when it welcomes Boston University at 2 p.m.
• RedStormSports.com will stream the game live through StormTracker All-Access. The contest will have a live video and audio broadcast, which will feature a multi-camera setup. Fans can access the feature by going to RedStormSports.com, clicking on the All-Access button and signing up for the service. The All-Access subscription is $9.95 a month or $79.95 for the year. There will also be live stats for the contest that can be accessed for free.
History Lesson
• The contest between St. John's and BU is the 14th meeting in history between the schools. The Red Storm leads the all-time series, 11-2, including a perfect 6-0 slate at home and a 5-2 mark on the road. The teams met frequently through 1979-1986, with STJ posting an 8-1 record during that time. After a 19-season break, the teams renewed the series on Nov. 18, 2005, as the Red Storm nabbed the 64-53 win at home. St. John's has won three of the last four contests, including a 74-66 victory on the road Dec. 30, 2008.
Scouting The Terriers
• BU opened the season with two-straight road losses before posting its first victory of the year in its last outing. After suffering a 92-58 loss on the road at Kentucky on Nov. 13, the Terriers lost a close game in overtime at in-state rival UMass on Nov. 15, 79-73. The team rebounded in its home opener on Nov. 18 when it recorded a 47-35 win over Rhode Island. Through three games, BU is averaging 59.3 points per game, while its opponents are averaging 68.7.
• The Terriers have two players that are averaging double-figures in scoring, and both are freshmen. Caitlynn Moran leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points. She is 13-of-30 from the field, 4-of-9 from long distance and 8-of-14 from the free-throw line. She is also pacing the team in rebounding, grabbing 5.0 boards per game. Kristen Sims is averaging 10.5 points, coming off the bench in two contests this year. She is 6-of-15 from the field, 3-of-9 from 3-point range and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Clutch Off The Bench
• Centhya Hart has opened the 2009-10 campaign with strong performances off the bench in STJ's first two games. On Nov. 15 against Stony Brook, the junior contributed nine points and five rebounds in 22 minutes of action. She went on to have the best scoring performance of her career against UMass on Nov. 18, dropping 14 points on a 5-of-9 effort from the field and a 4-of-4 effort from the charity stripe. The Memphis, Tenn., native also chipped in five rebounds and two assists in the victory.
Four Reach Double-Figures In Scoring
• In the Red Storm's 82-52 victory over UMass on Nov. 18, four STJ players reached double-figures in scoring. Da'Shena Stevens led the team in scoring for the second-straight contest with 17 points and came close to a double-double with nine rebounds. Hart finished as the second-leading scorer with a career-high 14 points off the bench. Freshmen Shenneika Smith and Eugeneia McPherson rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Lockdown Defender
• Joy McCorvey showed just how good she was defensively in the team's 82-52 win over UMass on Nov. 18. She was strong on the glass, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds, five offensive and six defensive. The senior swatted two balls to lead all players in the game, and she recorded a game-high four steals. She played 32 minutes in the contest, which led all Red Storm players.
30-Point Victories
• St. John's offense has gotten into rhythm early and often this season and defeated its first two opponents in 2009-10 by 30 points or more. The Red Storm opened the campaign on Nov. 15 at Stony Brook and defeated its in-state foe by 37 points, 89-52. Three players reached double-figures in scoring in the contest. In the Red Storm's next outing of the year, the team defeated UMass on the road by 30 points, 82-52. Four STJ players scored 10-or-more points in the victory.

On Deck
• The Red Storm will head south for the FIU Tournament Nov. 27-29 in Miami, Fla. STJ will open action on Nov. 27 when it faces Florida at 7 p.m. After a day off, the Red Storm will return to action on Sunday and face either FIU or St. Joseph's at 2 p.m. or 4 p.m.
