PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The St. John's volleyball team bowed to Rutgers in a tight 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 26-24, 22-25, 10-15) match in Piscataway on Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm (9-19, 2-10 BIG EAST) was led by junior Kun Song, who recorded a team-high 22 kills. Rutgers moves to 10-17 on the season and 3-9 in the BIG EAST.
A 23-20 lead after a kill from Song led to a first set win for the Red Storm. A solo-block from junior Diana Banya set STJ for set-point before an attack error ended the set 25-23.
An 8-0 run by the Red Storm that included four kills gave STJ a 10-3 advantage to begin the set. St. John's would lead by as many as eight points mid-set but Rutgers used a late run to come within three at 19-16. The Scarlet Knights tied the score at 25 and would score four of the next five points to capture the second set, 28-26.
Tied at 23 in the third set, both teams collected a point from an error before Darlene Ramdin and Banya tallied kills to win the set, 26-24. Neither team lead by more than two in the set.
The Red Storm trailed 22-15 late in the fourth stanza before a 7-2 STJ run brought it within two at 24-22. The Scarlet Knights capitalized on the set-point opportunity with a kill to win the set, 25-22.
St. John's led 8-5 before seven consecutive points from Rutgers in the final set. An attacking error added a point for the Red Storm to narrow the margin to three, but the Scarlet Knights prevailed with three kills to win the match, 3-2 after a 15-10 fifth set.
Song led the team with 22 kills and seven digs, while tallying three service aces and three blocks. Ramdin added 14 kills, nine digs and four blocks. Rookie Ashley Asing notched a match-high 23 digs.
