St. John's Travels To Face Villanova

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways when it travels to face Villanova on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

History Lesson
• The contest between St. John's and Villanova is the 49th meeting all-time between the teams. Villanova has the edge in the all-time series, 30-18, but the Red Storm has won two of the last three meetings. The teams have split games at STJ, 10-10, but the Wildcats have been more successful on their home court, 17-6, and at neutral sites, 3-2.
Scouting The Wildcats
• Villanova enters the contest with a 13-8, 5-2 BIG EAST record and has won three-straight and four of the last five. The Wildcats are coming off a 69-51 win over Syracuse on Jan. 31. On the season, Villanova is averaging 57.9 points per game and is outscoring its opponents by 4.6 ppg. The Wildcats are a perimeter shooting team, taking and hitting more than double of its opponent efforts from 3-point range. VU is 179-of-570 from long distance while its competitors are 77-of-225.
• The Wildcats have one player averaging double figures in scoring, as Laura Kurz leads the way with 18.2 points. She has started in all 21 games, is shooting 45.5 from the field and 31.1 from beyond the arc, while averaging a team-best 7.4 rebounds. The next two leading scorers are averaging nearly 10 points less than Kurz. Maria Getty is netting 8.9 points and is tied with Kurz for the lead with 33 3-pointers made. Siobhan O'Connor is adding 8.1 ppg and leads the team with 2.8 assists per game.
Stat Of The Week
• 10: The number of free throws the Red Storm connected on in the last 1:23 of regulation to clinch the 89-84 win over Seton Hall on Feb. 1.
On Deck
• The Red Storm returns home to the World's Most Famous Arena when it welcomes Cincinnati to Madison Square Garden on Sunday at 4 p.m. The meeting is the fourth between the teams, with the Red Storm winning all three previous contests.
Clutch Down The Stretch
• Monique McLean showed why she is the Red Storm's top player in its game against Seton Hall on Feb. 1. The senior was clutch down the stretch, scoring 18 of her 25 points in the second half, and more importantly, draining seven free throws in the final 1:23 of regulation.
KBA Records 100th Win At STJ
• With an 89-84 victory over Seton Hall on Feb. 1, Kim Barnes Arico became the fourth Red Storm women's basketball coach to reach 100 wins and the ninth basketball coach - men's and women's - at St. John's to accomplish the feat. Through seven seasons, she has a record of 100-97. Barnes Arico took over the helm of the Red Storm program on May 7, 2002, and has led it to unprecedented success, as STJ returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly two decades, made two WNIT appearances and five trips to the BIG EAST Tournament, while posting two 20-win seasons. Next up for Barnes Arico is her 200th-career win. Through 13 years, she has a record of 194-169.
