QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm softball team (8-9) took on Hofstra in its home-opener at Red Storm Field, but was outscored by the Pride, 6-1. Sophomore pitcher Linzee Sumrall struck out 10 and catcher Kacee Cox hit her second home run of the season.
The Pride (7-11) were first to get on the board as Hofstra got a two-run home run from first baseman Michele DePasquale in the top of the first inning.
Hofstra threatened again in the top of the third inning, loading the bases with one out. However, Sumrall was able to get out of trouble, inducing a fielder's choice to shortstop Jenna Berger, who was able to throw the runner out at home for the second out. Sumrall got more help from her defense when freshman Rachel Paragas was able to turn a tough out, throwing out the next batter at first which got the Red Storm out of the inning unscathed.
The top of the sixth inning was a good one for the Pride as they added a run after a walk and an error which pushed the score to 3-0. Hofstra then got two more runs on a single up the middle from DePasquale in the same inning and a solo home run from Joanna Kralowetz in the top of the seventh to put St. John's in a 6-0 disadvantage.
In the bottom of the final frame, Cox blasted a solo homer over the centerfield fence to cut the deficit to five, but that was as close as the Red Storm could get, falling 6-1.
St. John's hits the road this weekend as the squad opens BIG EAST Conference play. The Red Storm travels to DePaul for a doubleheader vs. the Blue Demons at noon (CST) on Saturday, before taking on Notre Dame in two games beginning at noon in South Bend.
