PITTSBURGH - Sky Lindsay and Kelly McManmon reached double figures in scoring, but that was not enough for the St. John's women's basketball team as No. 14/20 Pitt came away with the 79-60 victory on Monday night at the Peterson Events Center.
Lindsay posted 10 of her 16 points in the opening frame to lead the Red Storm in scoring for the second time this season. The sophomore was 6-of-10 from the field, 1-of-1 from 3-point range and 3-of-7 from the free throw line. She also contributed four rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes of play.
McManmon reached double figures in scoring for the 16th time this season with a 12-point performance. The senior was 5-of-11 from the field and 2-of-8 from long distance. She also posted a career-high five assists.
Junior Joy McCorvey just missed out on a double-double with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Off the bench, junior Aricia Mitchell had a solid performance, contributing seven points and six rebounds in 14 minutes, while fellow classmate Victoria Hodges set career bests with four points and five rebounds in eight minutes of play.
The game got off to a slow start as the teams combined for 10 points in the opening five minutes. After Pitt (22-6, 12-4 BIG EAST) took a 12-6 advantage, the Red Storm (16-13, 4-12 BIG EAST) went on a 5-0 run to come within one at 10:42.
The Panthers responded by going on a 6-0 run, but Lindsay nailed two-straight jumpers to put the score at 18-15. Pitt scored 10 unanswered points to jump ahead, 28-15, and maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the frame.
In the second half, Pitt's offense continued to surge and stayed in front the entire way. The Red Storm tried to rally, but could not come any closer.
St. John's will travel to the BIG EAST Tournament March 6-10 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The appearance is the 25th all-time for the Red Storm. Seeding, opponents and game times will be announced tomorrow.
