Women's Tennis Falls To Rutgers, 5-2

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team lost its conference match to Rutgers, 5-2, on Tuesday at the Courts at St. John's. With the loss, the Red Storm fell to 4-11 (3-5 BIG EAST), while the Scarlet Knights improved to 10-4 (5-2 BIG EAST).
Rutgers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The STJ duo of junior Ira Aleksova and freshman Nakita Austin earned the only Red Storm doubles victory at the No. 2 spot with an 8-2 win over RU's Katherine Arlak and Maryana Milchutskey.
In singles, freshman Ece Firat and sophomore Jenny Yonkus earned three-set victories at the No. 4 and 6 spots, respectively. Firat defeated Rutgers' Maryana Milchutskey, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4), in a tie-breaker, while Yonkus picked up a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over the Scarlet Knights' Leonora Slatnick.
The Red Storm returns to action on Sunday, April 5, when the squad plays host to BIG EAST-foe Syracuse. First serve of doubles competition is set for 10 a.m. at the Courts at St. John's.
