QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team (14-14, 4-4) got in one game of a scheduled doubleheader vs. local rival Fordham (23-12), but was outscored late and fell, 4-2.
"Zee [Sumrall] has been solid all season, but Fordham took advantage of some mistakes late and capitalized," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "Chelsea Plimpton pitched well for the Rams, but we need to take the lessons from this game, learn and move onto this weekend."
Fordham struck early as the Rams got a solo home run from designated player Mary Beth Puccio to take a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Fordham got runners on second and third with one out, but sophomore starter Linzee Sumrall was able to get out of trouble. Sumrall was able to induce two pop-outs to keep STJ within one.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Red Storm got a leadoff double to left-center from sophomore Chelsea Durning. With a full-count on her, catcher Kacee Cox golfed a two-run home run to dead center, which gave St. John's a 2-1 lead.
Fordham got a leadoff double from Jocelyn Dearborn in the top of the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch which tied the game. A two-run double down the leftfield line from centerfielder Melissa Andrews gave Fordham the lead, 4-2.
Fordham's Chelsea Plimpton finished her complete game victory, allowing four hits while striking out two.
Sumrall went 6.1 innings, striking out four while scattering five hits. Cox ended the game 2-for-2 with a single and a two-run home run.
Next up for the Red Storm, St. John's takes on BIG EAST-rival Rutgers in a doubleheader in Piscataway, N.J. The two-game set starts at noon on Saturday, April 4.
