QUEENS, N.Y. -
As St. John's men's lacrosse looks toward its last league game at Fairfield this weekend, senior attackman Drew Schanen got together with classmate Trevor Michaelsen to answer some of Michaelsen's questions on the season, pregame rituals and more to help Red Storm fans get to know Schanen better.
The consistent leader in points all season, Schanen has tallied 29 points off 24 goals and five assists. The senior from North Brunswick, N.J., debuted as a starter in the attack position in 2009 and easily filled the shoes of the alumni who graduated in 2008.
On April 13, Schanen earned his third conference honor as he was named to the ECAC honor roll. Against Penn State on April 11, Schanen scored four goals, three in the second half to help the Red Storm overcome an 11-5 deficit. The senior's four goals came off just nine shots, six on goal against Nittany Lion three-time ECAC Goaltender of the Year, Drew Adams.
The senior earned ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 30 after his career-best five goals against Rutgers.
Teammates for three seasons, this year's crop of seniors are a tight knit group who don't mind sharing some mid-season thoughts with Red Storm lacrosse fans or each other.
Trevor Michaelsen: Players on the team have some funny nicknames for you. Which is your favorite?
Drew Schanen: The nickname "Fatts" has been with me for a while now. I used to be a big boy, but I lost weight due to my teammates making fun of me, so that's my favorite.
TM: Is it true that you close your eyes when you shoot the ball?
DS: This is not true at all. I pick where I want the ball to go and then put it there.
TM: What is your favorite Coach Miller quote?
DS: "OOoOOOoo BABY!" Coach says this when he likes something that he sees, or when we're watching film and sees a weakness in our opponent.
TM: How fast do you shoot lefty?
DS: I don't know and I don't want to know. I was once told by a coach to just keep it in my right. But my righty shot has been clocked at 110 mph.
TM: What is the most memorable moment on and off the field.
DS: On the field I would have to say beating Georgetown. This was our first win against a top-five opponent and it was great achieving this with my fellow seniors. Off the field would have to be seeing the lacrosse world talk about our team and finally get some recognition.
TM: What is your favorite song to listen to before games?
DS: Well for most of the season I would always listen to "In the Air" by Nonpoint on repeat before games. But lately, I have been known to stick "All the Above" by Maino featuring T-Pain.
TM: What are your plans for when you graduate?
DS: I plan to work for Maverik Lacrosse. I have been doing an internship with them for the past three semesters and was offered a full-time job, which I accepted.
TM: What are your feelings going into the upcoming game against Fairfield?
DS: This weekend, we have to win. I will be putting everything I have into this game and I expect my teammates to do the same. I would really like to get another win before my playing days here are done.
TM: Finally, what advice do you have for young players currently on the team?
DS: Try your hardest everyday no matter what your job is on the team. It doesn't matter if you're a starter or on the practice squad. We are a team and the only way to get better is to give it your all everyday.
