QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team (23-22, 11-11) took on the Providence Friars (16-31, 8-11) in a BIG EAST doubleheader at Red Storm field and were outscored, 3-1 and 10-0.
Providence got on the board first in game one as the Friars plated one run in the top of the first on a wild pitch.
St. John's responded in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Melissa Pilley led off the inning with a single to third baseman and was followed by a walk to senior Roxy Struble. Freshman Julia Sanchez laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance both runners and set up sophomore Chelsea Durning who hit a deep fly ball which allowed Pilley to score and tie the game at one.
The Friars took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning on a two-RBI double to left-center from center fielder Mary Rose Sheehy. With a runner on second and two outs, freshman Kristi Cady ranged into left on a fly ball to make a full-extension, diving catch which got the Red Storm out of the inning without further damage.
St. John's threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning but Providence's Alicia Grosso was able to turn away the Red Storm effort and close out the win for the Friar's in game one.
Providence struck first in game one as well. A two-RBI double from shortstop Jenna Garcia gave PC the 2-0 lead in the top of the first frame.
The Friars added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-RBI double from shortstop Jenna Garcia and added three more doubles which plated two more runs in the sixth and pushed the Providence advantage to six.
PC tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh inning on three hits including a home run from catcher Teresa Bertels.
Providence's Danielle Bertolette was un-hittable vs. the Red Storm, striking out two and only walking two on her way to her to a no-hit, complete game-shutout.
The Red Storm wraps up its seven-game homestand on Wednesday, April 29, in a doubleheader vs. Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m.
