QUEENS, N.Y. - Head coach Ian Stone and the St. John's women's soccer team announced their schedule for the 2009 campaign. The Red Storm will have 10 home contests, including an exhibition game, and will face five NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.
"Once again we have put together a challenging schedule for the team, and I am looking forward to getting the season started," Stone said. "We have a tough non-conference schedule that will test our abilities early and prepare us for BIG EAST action. I know the team is ready to take on the challenge and I am excited to see how they respond."
Returning all its starters from last season, the Red Storm will be looking to build upon its successes in 2008 when it posted an 8-6-5 record, earned a berth to the BIG EAST Tournament and set the program record with 10 shutouts and a 0.593 goals against average.
STJ will play in two exhibition contests to prepare for regular season action. The team will travel to face Maryland on Aug. 13 at 3 p.m. and conclude preseason action hosting Stony Brook on Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
The Red Storm will open regular season action at Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. (6 p.m. Pacific) and will conclude its West Coast trip on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. (3 p.m. Pacific) against USC, who advanced to the third round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
St. John's will return to Belson Stadium on Sept. 4 for its home opener against New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m., before hitting the road to face 2008 NCAA participant Princeton on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.
After the one-game road trip, the Red Storm returns to Queens, N.Y., for a three-game homestand. STJ will welcome local foe LIU on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. and Indiana on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. before opening BIG EAST action with Syracuse on Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. The team will wrap up non-conference action when it travels to face Columbia on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
UConn will travel to Belson Stadium on Sept. 24 to face St. John's at 7 p.m. After the Red Storm travels to Providence on Sept. 27 for a noon contest, the team will host a two-game homestand in Queens, facing Louisville on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. and Cincinnati on Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
The Red Storm will hit the road for four-straight games and will face two BIG EAST opponents that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament in West Virginia and Rutgers. STJ will face Pitt on Oct. 9, West Virginia on Oct. 11, Seton Hall on Oct. 16 and Rutgers on Oct. 18.
Regular-season action for the Red Storm will conclude in the friendly confines of Belson Stadium, as it hosts USF on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. and Marquette on Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
The BIG EAST Tournament will take place Oct. 29-Nov. 8, with UConn hosting the semifinals and finals Nov. 6-8.
