QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's soccer player Sarah McGrath has been selected to represent Ireland at the 2009 World University Games held July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. The rising senior was one of 18 players selected to the squad and is the only player on the roster representing a college in the United States.
"It is an honor to represent Ireland at the World University games this summer," McGrath said. "This is going to be a great experience and I look forward to stepping up to the challenge. I am very excited to play against the best teams in the world, and I am going to use this experience in my senior season at St. John's."
McGrath is coming off one of her best seasons to date for the Red Storm. In 2008, the Naas, Ireland, native set career highs across the board, starting in all 19 games, firing 18 shots and recording a team-high five assists. Three of her five assists were on game-winning goals. For her efforts, she was named to the All-BIG EAST second team, in addition to being named to the NSCAA Scholar All-East Region team.
"We are very proud that Sarah was selected to represent Ireland at this prestigious event," said St. John's head coach Ian Stone. "I know she will make an impact on the team. She will have her abilities tested at the highest level, and she will excel at the challenge. I look forward to her bringing back this valuable experience to pass along to her teammates at St. John's."
