QUEENS, N.Y. - A familiar face returns to the St. John's women's soccer team, as head coach Ian Stone announced the addition of Michele Canning to the staff. Canning, a former assistant under Stone from 2004-07, will resume her role as an assistant coach.
"We are thrilled to have Michele back on our staff," Stone said. "She knows my expectations of the team and how I work, and she brings a wealth of experience and talent to our program."
Canning returns for her fifth season with the Red Storm after spending a year completing her master's degree at Florida Atlantic University. While at FAU, she taught two undergraduate courses in women's studies and served on the University's inaugural Women's Leadership Forum Committee.
Initially joining the Red Storm staff in 2004, Canning helped STJ clinch three BIG EAST Tournament berths and saw the 2007 team set the new program record with six BIG EAST victories and eight home wins.
Canning came to St. John's after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Seton Hall, where she was also a standout on the Pirates' women's soccer team from 1994-98. Prior to her time coaching at Seton Hall, Canning served for one season as an assistant at Florida Atlantic University. She also served as the Assistant Director of Coaching Services for the Long Island Lady Riders, members of the W-league, where she assisted in coaching, training and directing the Lady Riders' camps.
In 2004, she was a part of the Region I Camp staff, and served as an assistant coach for the Eastern New York Olympic Development Under-17 team in 2005.
Canning began her coaching career with the New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP) Under-19 team. She then coached with the Long Island Junior Soccer League, working as head coach for the Under-15 Girls Team.
In 1994, she entered Seton Hall and was a member of the inaugural women's soccer team. She finished her career tied for fifth in scoring (21 points) and goals (8), including netting the program's first-ever goal.
Canning has an Advanced National Coaching Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
