QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Adam Himeno tallied three goals, all in the first half, to lead the St. John's men's soccer team past Lafayette, 4-0, in an exhibition game at Belson Stadium. Sophomore Walter Hines also added a goal, tallying early in the second half.
"I was pleased with the effort tonight," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "We sent a lot of guys out onto the field and saw what they were capable of in a game situation."
Freshman Nick Matthews set up the first goal for St. John's. After working the ball up the left side, Matthews sent a ball into the box and Himeno cleaned up a deflection to put the Red Storm on the board.
Junior Sverre Wegge Gundhus and sophomore Joakim Helland worked to set up the second goal. Once again the ball ended up at the feet of Himeno and St. John's led 2-0.
It was Himeno again finding the back of the net to give the Red Storm a 3-0 lead. The forward had a breakaway and buried a shot into the upper corner.
Shortly into the second half, Hines got in on the scoring. The speedy sophomore made a great run up the left side of the field and beat the keeper to the far corner to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Senior Derby Carrillo got the start in goal, blanking Lafayette in the first half. Redshirt freshman Nunzio Belfiore combined on the shutout by keeping the Leopards off the board in second half of action.
St. John's will return to exhibition action, traveling to face Hofstra on Aug. 25. The Red Storm concludes exhibition play against Lehigh on Aug. 28.
