MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. - Freshman Jimmy Mulligan and junior Sverre Wegge Gundhus each tallied goals late in the second half as the St. John's men's soccer team defeated Hofstra, 2-0, in an exhibition game. It was a return home for Mulligan, who starred with the Massapequa Soccer Club before his arrival at St. John's.
The game, part of the Town of Oyster Bay's Supervisor's Challenge, featured a youth clinic prior to the matchup.
"Hofstra is a well-coached, athletic team and this was a great test for us," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "There was a great crowd on hand for this great event and our players enjoyed participating in the youth clinic."
St. John's nearly took a 1-0 lead shortly before halftime, but a shot by sophomore Pablo Punyed bounced off the crossbar and the game remained scoreless at the break.
It was Mulligan who broke the scoreless draw with a blast from 25-yards out with just 14:42 left in regulation. Less than one minute later, Wegge Gundhus made it 2-0. Sophomore Cristian Gonzalez carried the ball upfield before passing off to redshirt freshman Matt Bienkowski. Wegge Gundhus then received the ball and pushed in a shot from close range.
Senior Derby Carrillo got the start in goal, blanking Hofstra in the first half. Redshirt freshman Nunzio Belfiore combined on the shutout by keeping the Pride off the board in second half of action.
St. John's concludes exhibition play against Lehigh on Aug. 28.
