QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team will start its fall season this Friday as the host of The 2009 McLaughlin at Bethpage State Park's Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
The McLaughlin runs Sept. 18-19 and features 18 teams from around the country. This year's field also includes Coastal Carolina, UNC Wilimington, Boston College, Connecticut, Creighton, Dartmouth, Harvard, Iona, Johnson & Wales, Princeton, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, St. Thomas, Temple, Towson, Villanova and West Florida.
"We have a great field and a wonderful golf course for our event," said 15th-year head coach Frank Darby. "The Red Course, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, is a different type of course than its brutal sister course, the Black, and it's just as good in its own right. The Red is a parkland course, with a number of doglegs, long par 4s and green speeds that can get very quick."
Practice rounds begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. The teams will play 36 holes on Friday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Saturday's final round will begin off the first tee with tee times starting at 7:15 a.m. Spectators are welcome to come out and watch the action.
Southeastern Louisiana took the team title at The McLaughlin last year with a 14-over showing. The individual championship was a three-way tie between Johnson & Wales' Dave Tobon, Sacred Heart's Pat Fillian and Iona's Sean Curtin.
St. John's will look to improve on its seventh-place, 24-over showing from 2008. Then-junior Mike Ballo Jr. led the Red Storm last year at Bethpage Red, carding a 72-70-70--212 (+2) to tie for 10th place.
