St. John's Reclaims Queens/Nassau Cup With 3-1 Defeat Of Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The St. John's volleyball team won the Eighth Annual Queens/Nassau Cup over Hofstra, 3-1 in Hempstead on Wednesday. The Red Storm (5-7) fell in the first set before winning the next three to take the 8-7 lead in the all-time series with Hofstra (2-9).
Down 22-12 in the first set, the Red Storm battled back with 10-2 run to make it 24-22, but the Pride was able to put it away to take the first set. Junior Kun Song helped to propel the St. John's run, scoring four of the 10 points.
After three straight kills from junior Diana Banya, the Red Storm had gained an 18-13 lead in the second set. Darlene Ramdin hit her groove late in the set, after a solo block for St. John's 20th point. Ramdin got the next kill and followed with a block-assist to give the Red Storm a 23-15 lead. Seven consecutive points from the Pride made it 24-22 before an attack error handed the Red Storm the set, 25-23, to tie the match at one set apiece.
STJ climbed to an 8-1 lead to open the third stanza before extending the advantage to 19-6 after an 8-1 run by the Red Storm. St. John's would go on to win the set, 25-14 and take the 2-1 lead in the match.
The Red Storm saw its early 11-4 lead diminish as the Pride battled back in the fourth set. STJ continued to lead throughout the set, up by as many as seven, 21-14, late in the stanza. A block from the Red Storm scored the 23rd point before a kill from Ramdin and a Hofstra service error ended the set, 25-17, bringing the Queens/Nassau Cup back to Queens.
Ramdin finished with 22 kills to lead three Red Storm players in double-figures. Banya tallied 12, while Song recorded a double-double of 11 digs and 11 kills. Freshman Ashley Asing tallied 24 digs. Rookie Gabriela Petkova registered 42 assists for STJ. The Red Storm
Monica Knight led Hofstra with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Kylee Maneja led the team with 18 digs.
The Red Storm will compete in its final non-conference tournament of the season at Cornell on Sept. 18 and 19. St. John's will take on Buffalo, Colgate and Cornell.
