Red Storm Volleyball Hosts STJ Classic

Capturing its first win of the season at Stony Brook on Tuesday, the St. John's volleyball team prepares for its home-opener in its own STJ Classic. Fordham, Quinnipiac, and Boston College will all take part in the tournament.
STORMWATCH
Sophomore Darlene Ramdin made her season debut for the Red Storm at Stony Brook after competing in the World Nationals for Trinidad and Tobago. Ramdin led St. John's with 20 kills, a career-high.
Junior Kun Song registered her second-consecutive double-double of the season at Stony Brook. Song is averaging 10 kills and 10 digs per match in 2009.
Junior Diana Banya has recorded 40 kills so far this season, tying for first on the team with Song.
Freshman Gabriela Petkova will face a familiar opponent on the Boston College sqaud on Friday. The Eagles' Tsvetekina Dureva, played on the same club team as Petkova in Bulgaria for more than eight years.
The Red Storm is 11-4 all-time in home-openers since the program's inception in 1994.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
The Eagles return five familiar faces to their starting lineup in 2009 and welcome seven newcomers to the court.
Sophomore Jordan Meredith led the Eagles in digs (198) last season and was second on the squad in kills (274). Taylor Williams is the lone senior for BC in 2009. Williams led the Eagles in kills (276) and service aces (31).
BC was 8-24 a year ago, finishing 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
St. John's leads the all-time series with the Eagles, 8-3, with four wins coming at home.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
The Rams return each of their six starters and libero - completing a squad that returned an 18-16 record a year ago. Fordham finished at 6-7 in Atlantic 10 play to tie for second place in the East division.
The Rams are set to face Boston College for the second time in a week after playing the Eagles last weekend in the Buffalo Tournament.
Fordham comes to Queens with a 1-2 record.
The Red Storm leads the all-time series with Fordham, 13-1.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Quinnipiac plays its season-opener against Fordham in the first round of the STJ Classic. The Bobcats finished at 5-29 a year ago.
The Bobcats will look to leading returners Kayla Lawler and Alyssa Naylor. Lawler averaged 7.48 assists per set in 2008, while Naylor tallied 2.03 kills per set a year ago.
