STJ Continues Homestand With Siena

The St. John's volleyball team will spend one more game at home before hopping on the road to Miami, Ohio this coming weekend. The Red Storm hosts Siena on Tuesday for the third time in program history. STJ leads the all-time series, 7-2, winning both matches against the Saints in Queens. The Red Storms' only losses to Siena came in 1994 (9/23/94, L, 1-3 and 10/22/94, L, 0-3). The last meeting between the two came in 2005, where St. John's recorded a 3-0 sweep on neutral territory.
STORMWATCH
Sophomore Darlene Ramdin earned STJ Classic All-Tournament team honors for her superior performances against Boston College, Fordham and Quinnipiac. Ramdin combined for 65 kills in the tournament.
Freshman Ashley Asing came up with a game- and career-high 17 digs to lead the Red Storm against Boston College. The rookie earned the starting role this season on defense and has held her own in the back row for St. John's.
Rookie Gabriela Petkova's 55 helpers against the Fordham Rams were the most by a member of the Red Storm this season.
Head coach Joanne Persico notched the 15th win of her career over Fordham as part of the STJ Classic. The Red Storm has a 14-1 all-time series record with the Rams,the only loss coming in 1999 in the Bronx.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Siena visits Queens with a 1-2 record in 2009 after competing in the Big Orange Tournament at Syracuse University on Aug. 28 and 29. The Saints suffered losses to Sacramento State (3-2) and Syracuse (3-0) before claiming their first win of the season against New Hampshire (3-0).
The Saints welcome aboard nine freshman for the fall and return just two seniors from a squad that finished at 20-13 (15-3 MAAC) in 2008. Siena captured the MAAC title with a 3-0 sweep of Fairfield before advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season. The Saints were knocked out in the first round by then- No. 7 California.
Siena and Fairfield were both picked as preseason favorites in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Saints will look to senior Burgandy McCurty for leadership this season. McCurty, named Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, has led the team in kills in each of tis three matches this season.

The Red Storm travels to Miami, Ohio for the Miami Best Western Invitational, where it will take on Miami, Pacific and Troy.
RED STORM TAKES HOME PAIR OF WINS IN ST. JOHN'S CLASSIC
St. John's earned two wins in the St. John's Classic on Sept. 4 and 5. The Red Storm made its first sweep of the season over Quinnipiac, 3-0, before downing Fordham in the nightcap, 3-1.
Sophomore Darlene Ramdin notched 29 kills in a 3-1 loss to Boston College and continued the hot-streak with 25 kills against Fordham and 11 versus Quinnipiac, both game-highs. Her performance landed her STJ Classic All-Tournament team honors.
ST. JOHN'S NOTCHES FIRST WIN OF 2009 OVER STONY BROOK
Stony Brook claimed the first set, but the Red Storm took over from there, winning the second set, 25-15, the third set, 25-18 and the fourth, 25-22. The match marked sophomore Darlene Ramdin's first of the season after returning from the World Nationals, where she represented Trinidad and Tobago. Ramdin recorded 20 kills, a then career-high. Freshman Gabriela Petkova notched 43 assists in the match and junior Kun Song tallied a game-high 13 digs.
